Other Durable Insoles
FG (Firm Ground) Sole

The FG insole is one of the most used and most purchased sole plates by us nerds and professionals. The FG sole is suitable for compact playing fields with natural grass, dry or not soaked. The FG insole is mainly available with two types of cleats, conical or lamellar.
Adidas shoes rely heavily on a hybrid structure for their silos (Predator, X, and Nemeziz). With the new Predator 18+ introduced on the market, the new Control Frame sole comes with irregular conical notches able to help players to have the maximum in terms of mobility and grip. The Nemeziz FG is characterized above all by the truncated shape of its 11 conical studs, designed for maximum agility on the field.
The approaches are chosen on Adidas X 17 and Adidas Copa 18 are more traditional. The Sprintframe sole shows essentially conical, even if the shape is hybrid, it comes with a single lamellar in the center of the forefoot. The Copa 18 features the same Sprintframe structure with 11 conical studs. It has seven studs in the forefoot and four studs to support the rear.
Nike divides the types of FG notching more clearly. On the Mercurial, Nike has for some years already presented a lamellar notch (gallon). It can favor players who make speed their strong point. This concept has been further taken to the extreme with the new Mercurial 360. There is no sole plate and we find the cleats only on the front and back of the boot.
On Tiempo and Hypervenom, Nike creates a mix of conical and bladed studs. The mix of the two types makes it possible to create stable shoes. It can enhance their respective key characteristics (ball control for the Tiempo and agility for the Hypervenom 3) without sacrificing the other characteristics.
On Tiempo 7, the conical studs are available on the lateral part of the forefoot to ensure stability. The HyperReact sole of the HV3 is more complex, inspired by the Nike Free running models, with the lamellar on the external sides of the foot. It is perfect for immediate changes in direction and lateral cuts.
Puma with the new Future and One 18.1 focuses heavily on the mix of the conical cleat with the lamellar cleat for the FG sole plates. In the Puma Future, we find a flat sole with conical studs on the forefoot and heel, while in the central part we find 4 lamellar studs that facilitate stability.
A different choice is the One 18.1 model that has lamellar studs on the back and the tip and conical studs in the central part. The position of the two lamellar studs on the tip allows players to have more inspiration in the shots. The conical studs facilitate changes in direction.
For all the major brands, more traditional soles are ideal. They are the FG of the past. It is the ones we have learned to know and appreciate on shoes like the Adidas Copa Mundial or the Puma King.
Having the brands kept these heritage silos in their range. For the most fundamentalists among the Nerds, it is still possible to play on TPU soles with fixed, strictly conical plastic cleats. Besides Copa Mundial, the Puma King, the Nike Premier, and the Umbro Speziali meet this requirement.
SG or SG-PRO (Soft Ground or SG Professional) Sole

The SG or SG-PRO sole is suitable for wet grounds, where grip plays a fundamental role in the stability of the players. Over the years, the SG soles have undergone a significant change passing through all the brands from the classic six stud insoles to the mixed soles called SG-PRO, with fixed and removable studs together, to offer a greater degree of grip than the FG soles without giving up to the elements that facilitate speed and agility.
In the SG-PRO soles now adopted by all brands, the one who has set the standard is Nike. Nike has introduced the SG-PRO Anti Clog sole beside the SG-PRO sole for a couple of years. It is a special plate that allows the sole to remain clean in the presence of mud and avoids the deposit of mud. It can also minimize that annoying flat-sole effect that occurs when the earth accumulates under the feet. Nike offers the SG-PRO Anti Clog insole for all its Mercurial, Tiempo, Marista, and Hypervenom silos. Adidas and Puma also adopt the SG-PRO sole for all their silos for wet ground.
AG (Artificial Grass) Sole

The AG sole is suitable for synthetic grass pitches. The AG soles are available with mainly conical studs able to guarantee maximum mobility on artificial terrains. In synthetic turf fields, we do not recommend the lamellar studs as they could cause injuries related to the increase in traction. On this type of sole, our analyzed brands offer a unique solution.
Nike and Adidas feature an AG sole made up entirely of conical studs capable of providing players with complete freedom of movement on synthetic grounds. Nike shoes have worked a lot on the AG sole, developing a revolutionary sole called AG-PRO in recent years. It allows the player to have maximum mobility and thanks to the increase in the cleat’s height, it also significantly improves grip on synthetic fields. Adidas proposes a conical notch for AG soles, with the presence of a greater number of studs on the inside of the foot to increase traction on synthetic fields.
How to Choose the Best Shoe Soles?
Gender
Knowing which gender the chosen sole is ideal for is about aesthetics, but it is not the case at all. The gender statement is more about the length and width of the soles and how they were created. It means that you should look for the insole created for the specific gender or a sole classified as unisex.
It usually means that it makes them from a material that can be cut to fit your shoe perfectly. Hence, you will not have any kind of discomfort or irritation. It also means that the heel cup and other built-in features are more likely to be in the right place so that you have more overall success with wearing your sock.
Functions
Most insoles have a specific purpose. Some are perfect for people who work long hours on their feet, such as doctors, teachers, or retailers, while they specifically created others for people who work outdoors in all weathers. So, they must keep their feet warm and protected. Alternatively, there are insoles specially designed for people who play a lot of sports or spend a lot of time doing recreational activities, such as running, hiking, and biking.
Air Flow
Whatever your choice of insoles, you always want to have dry and cool feet. If you ignore it, you risk getting bacterial infections such as an athlete’s foot. For this reason, humid places are great for bacteria to thrive. We should look at further soles created with airflow channels. These air channels ensure that hot air is exhausted around the feet and they move cool air to them.
