Female soldiers are usually significantly less physically strong than their male counterparts. But many women are fearless enough to make it through basic training, where they learn the basics of marksmanship and other specialties to help break stereotypes about their gender.

Some of these soldiers choose to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, mainly known for their upward mobility and skills in combat. The image of a female Marine is formed by such brave role models as Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester, Sgt. Kristen Griest and Lt. Col Dianna Williams, three women whose stories not only left a lot of people in awe but also inspired thousands of girls to join the military and break gender barriers everywhere.

There is a lot of talks that the Army is about to become an all-woman service. Although women have been part of the Army since World War II, men and women were physically separated throughout their careers. They served in different units — one all-female and one all-male — with no chance of advancement to higher positions within the military. This is changing now with the open combat roles for women and recent female soldiers taking on leadership positions.

A woman’s first journey into combat should be a memorable one, and that’s especially true for the women who served their country in Iraq and Afghanistan.

1. Meagan Michele

Meagan Michele is a U.S. Army soldier who just became the first woman to “defuse” an IED independently. Michelle is also one of the hottest female soldiers.

Meagan Michelle is a United States Army soldier recently awarded the Bronze Star medal for her service in Afghanistan. Michelle joined the Army in 2013 and is currently stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. She was recently awarded the bronze star medal for defusing an IED while on duty in Afghanistan this past winter.

2. Kerrin O’Neill

Kerrin O’Neill is a member of the U.S. Air Force who has been a Combat Controller for two years.

In her 1st week of basic training, O’Neill was one of only three women out of 115 recruits that finished the entire course. In her 10th week, she graduated from Air Force basic training and immediately headed to the Combat Control School to learn how to control air traffic over war zones.

After she graduates, O’Neill will have a good shot at being deployed in Afghanistan or Iraq. She will be the only woman to serve in this role in the entire Air Force.

O’Neill is currently working with her fellow airmen to determine what they think about having a female combat controller in their ranks.  Lauren Slisher, a member of the honor guard for the United States Air Force Academy, was crowned Miss America in 2018.

Katherine, a cryptologist in the Navy, says that being a woman in the military can be hard sometimes. She recalls having to listen to men who are not her friends telling her what she should and shouldn’t do like she’s incapable of making decisions for herself. Katherine has held positions of leadership since she was seventeen years old and is currently using her expertise in cryptology to help the Navy protect classified information. She has spent the last year at the Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) at Suitland, Maryland, where she assists in protecting America’s most sensitive secrets.

Katherine joined NSGA because she wanted to be able to use her skills to protect our nation’s secrets. When she was discharged from the Navy, Katherine enrolled in Enlisted Training School (ETS).
