It delves into themes of discrimination, social alienation, identity, prejudice, revenge, abuse, and the value of humanity. The series features graphic violence, emotional character development, and transgressive subject matter. |
Setting | Elfen Lied takes place in Kamakura and Kanagawa and focuses on the Diclonii, a mutated species similar to humans but with horn-like protrusions on their heads and telekinetic “vectors.” The series centers around Lucy, a Diclonius girl, who escapes from a facility and is taken in by two locals, Kouta and Yuka. The story explores their interactions, the pursuit of Lucy by a Special Assault Team and other Diclonii, and the contrast between the inhumanity of ordinary people and the humanity of the Diclonii. |
Diclonii Powers | Diclonii possess telekinetic invisible arms called “vectors” that can grasp, impact, and slice objects. They can also become insubstantial and pass through objects. Diclonii demonstrate the ability to sense one another, and if a Diclonius vector touches a human male, the “vector virus” is transferred, resulting in their children being born as Diclonii. The only Diclonius capable of reproducing is Lucy, referred to as the “queen.” |
Themes | Elfen Lied addresses themes of discrimination, social alienation, identity, prejudice, revenge, abuse, jealousy, regret, and the value of humanity. It explores the propensity towards violence among the Diclonii and debates whether it stems from their genetic code or their mistreatment by humans. The series also examines the consequences of dividing and segregating people based on their differences and touches on the desire for population dominance and “purification” by both the Diclonii and humans. |
Anime Adaptation | The anime adaptation of Elfen Lied consists of a 13-episode television series directed by Mamoru Kanbe and animated by Arms. It aired from July to October 2004 and features a different ending from the ongoing manga at the time. The series balances its darker themes with romantic sub-plots and comedic moments. It is known for its juxtaposition of violence, cuteness, and artistic references to Gustav Klimt’s paintings. The anime is licensed in North America by ADV Films and in Australia by Madman Entertainment. |
Reception | Elfen Lied has received both praise and criticism for its graphic violence, emotional storytelling, and exploration of dark themes. It is often described as a thought-provoking and intense series that evokes a range of emotions. The manga has been licensed by Dark Horse Comics, while the anime has garnered a dedicated fanbase worldwide. Despite its controversial elements, Elfen Lied remains a significant work in the dark fantasy and science fiction genres. |

Synopsis | Blood-C is a 2011 Japanese anime television series co-created by Production I.G and CLAMP. It follows the story of Saya Kisaragi, a seemingly normal high school girl who is actually a skilled swordswoman tasked with defeating Elder Bairns, monsters that feed on human blood. As Saya’s battles become more desperate and her reality starts to crumble, she uncovers a disturbing truth about herself and the town she protects. The series has been adapted into manga, a novel, stage plays, and live-action films. |
Setting | Blood-C is set in an isolated rural town on the shore of Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture. Saya Kisaragi is the shrine maiden of the Shinto shrine run by her father Tadayoshi. By day, she lives a normal school life, but by night, she fights against the Elder Bairns who threaten the village and feed on human blood. Saya’s battles become increasingly desperate as the Elder Bairns begin attacking during the day, and she starts questioning her identity and mission. |
Main Characters | Saya Kisaragi, Fumito Nanahara, Yūka Amino, Nene and Nono Motoe, Itsuki Tomofusa, Shinichirō Tokizane, Kanako Tsutsutori |
Unique Elements | Blood-C introduced several new elements to the Blood franchise, such as a high school setting and the inspiration of Elder Bairns from H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. The series incorporated bloody violence to emphasize its themes but faced censorship in Japan and blacklisting in China. The design of the main cast was handled by CLAMP, and the music was composed by Naoki Satō. The series has received mixed to positive reviews from journalists. |
The movie Blood C revolves around the female protagonist Saya – one of two purebred vampires of the Chiropteran race. She becomes a hunter of the Red Shield – an organization created to destroy Diva – Saya’s twin sister, the creator of the bloodthirsty Chiropterans and a significant threat to humanity (Diva wants to use her blood to turn humans into Chiropterans). Saya uses a special katana to draw blood from Saya’s hand to coat the blade and “purify” the undead Chiropterans.

Years after their parents’ sad automobile accident deaths, Haruka and Sora decide to return to their homeland. They reside at their grandfather’s house, a place that always serves as a reminder of the past. Even though they like spending time in their hometown, they quickly invent a secret that needs to remain hidden. Yosuga no Sora features typical anime elements, including character growth, a straightforward plot, and most crucially the chemistry between the characters.

Perfect blue is about an idol Mima who decides to leave the group and become an actress. From her cute and lovely image, Mima was forced to switch to sexy, sexy, even having to play hot scenes and take nude photos. This inadvertently caused a lot of contradictions in Mima’s mind, plus the pressure of the fans’ threats of criticism; the distance of her colleagues gradually caused Mima to cause her hallucinations. Perfect Blue will impact how one’s life may alter due to a single decision, although ‘entertaining you with the adult topic’ is set aside.
