In August 1974, Johnson made history by becoming the first African-American model to grace the cover of American Vogue. Johnson made history by being the first black woman to grace the cover of Elle’s French edition in 1975.
Famous supermodel Beverly Johnson revealed the risky diets she used to maintain her position at the top of the modeling industry decades after her appearance on the Vogue cover made history for Black women. She wrote in her 2015 book, The Face That Changed It All, “I was eating nothing, zero.” “I had black coffee in the morning, a sip of broth when things got tough, and a glass of champagne in the evening to perk me up. Neither of us even drank water. We believed it to be fattening.” The phrase “The skinnier you were, the more fabulous you were” was used to promote harmful behavior.

Bulimia was a “bad habit” that she’d kick into if something emotional was happening to her. She never binged and puked up. She just ate regular meals but then got rid of it all. Becoming a parent is what ended the cycle for her – she let go of all of it. After the birth, she knew she couldn’t go back to the illness and stopped eating.
