Which Shoe Size to choose from?

How to Measure Shoe Size?

For each foot, there are four different measurement moments:
- Static condition: it is the size of the shoe with the foot at rest.
- Shoe size under load: it is when the person is standing and therefore the size and shape of the foot change.
- Functional measure: in dynamic conditions, it is the one that can be obtained when a person performs movements such as running, walking fast, or jumping.
- Thermal measurement: it considers the changes produced by heat and humidity. It can sometimes cause the foot to swell up to 5% compared to its measurement in a static condition.
What is the best time to choose a pair of shoes with the certainty of not getting the wrong size? The answer is in the evening when the combination of functional measurement and thermal measurement can determine the right size. It is useful to try on the shoes with the same type of socks that you plan to wear with the extra pair.
When you try on the new shoe, bend the tip of the foot to make sure the upper folds in that same place. It will help you determine the flexibility of the shoes and their softness, especially with lace-up shoes. Place your foot on a flat surface and measure the length from the heel to the longest toe using a tape measure. You can also make a mark on a sheet of paper at the heel and one at the longest finger and measure the length between the two strokes with a ruler.
During the measurement, make sure you are in an upright position, and keep the entire sole of your foot flat on the ground. Remember to repeat the same procedure for the other foot because no one has feet of the same size, shape, or proportions and the length may be slightly different.
Toe and heel should stay inside the shoe without causing pain or discomfort. Normally, there should be about one centimeter between the tip of the foot in the longest part and the tip of the shoe. The same measure goes for the space between the heel and the buttress. Your finger should pass between the two with no effort. If it goes in too easily, the shoe is big. Otherwise, it is too small.
In many countries, to establish the correct number of the length of the foot, an instrument called Brannock is available. With this tool, it is possible to get three basic measurements. They are the length of the foot, the distance between the heel and the metatarsophalangeal joint, and the width at this articulation.
No one at home has this tool. So, you can proceed with an equally effective do-it-yourself method. Make a mark on a sheet of paper at the heel and one at the longest finger. You need to measure the length between the two toe-heel sections and add to the measured measurement:
- From 3 to 6 mm if the longest toe is the big toe
- From 2 to 4 mm if the longest finger is the second finger
- From 3 to 6 mm if the longest toe is the third toe or the first two toes after the big toe is the same length.
In this way, you will determine your shoe size. So, you can easily choose your shoes both online and in stores without the risk of getting the wrong size.

Ankle Width: How To Measure Foot Width?
We can measure the shoe width at the widest point of the foot. But how best to measure? Whether you can simply measure your shoe width by yourself or need the help of a second person, depends on how flexible you are. The best way to measure foot width is while standing. Because when standing, your foot has the realistic load and thus width.
Place a tape measure around the widest part of the ball of the foot and read its circumference. Ideally, a second person takes over the measurement so that you remain stable. You have now determined your foot width in centimeters.

Types of Shoe Width
Here lies the crux. There is only one standardized system for determining the foot width, it is the Mondopoint system. Here the foot width-measured at the height of the ball of the foot given in millimeters. The Mondopoint system is available in the military for protective or work shoes.
It is more difficult with casual shoes. Here, the foot width is often marked with letters. There are different letter systems:
- Shoe width G: normal width (normal feet)
- Shoe width H: wider when the feet are wider.
- Shoe width K: wide feet
Another system is:
- W or B for wide or wide, sometimes also K for comfort width
- M for medium
- S for narrow
The most common is the shoe width system. It ranges from E to M:
- Shoe width E: narrow feet
- Shoe width F: slim feet with the normal width. For shoe size 36, it is 21.6 cm. For size 38, it is 22.4 cm. And for size 41, it is 23.6 cm. Anyone who has shoe width F can wear most standard shoes. Shoe sizes in cm here.
- Shoe width G: wide feet with the comfort width. For size 38, it is 22.9 cm. And for size 40, it is 23.7 cm. Most available shoes also fit with this shoe width.
